#237: Oracle Scene (The Matrix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHGIGwiMK6c

Instructions:  Listen to the youtube video above and fill in the blanks in the transcript below (or write your answers on a piece of paper). Beginners can use the list of missing words and phrases, but if you're an advanced student, try to fill in the blanks just by listening to the video, without looking at the missing words and phrases.  The answers are given at the end of the lesson.

Main Features:  This video has four important features.  1) The word "have" often sounds like "ev".  For example, the phrase "would have" can sound like "would ev".  We've also seen in previous lessons that the "v" sound can also disappear, so the phrase "would have" can also sound like "woulda".  2) The combination of "t + y" often sounds like "ch"; for example, "let you" can sound like "let chu" and "but you" can sound like "but chu".  Similarly, the combination of "d + y" often sounds like "j"; for example, the phrase "did you" can sound like "did ju" and "would you" can sound like "would ju".  3) The phrase "I'm going to" can sound like "ahmonna".  Let me explain how we get this sound.  Most people already know that "going to" can sound like "gonna".  Now, if the initial "g" sound is missing, then "gonna" will sound like "onna".  And if the word "I'm" sounds like "ahm", then the phrase "I'm going to" will sound more like "ahm onna".  I write this sound as one word, "ahmonna" because there aren't any pauses when it's said.  {Note:  I could say a lot more about why these sounds disappear.  If you want to know, send me a message.}  4) The combination of two features next to each other in one sentence.  The phrase "I'm going to let you" sounds like "ahmonna let chu".

Missing Words and Phrases (7):  But you're [but chur]; did you [did ju]; have [ev]; him [im]; I'm going to let you [ahmonna let chu]; what do you [whad da do you]; would you [would ju].

Transcript:

Almost done. {They} smell good, don't they?

Yeah.

I'd ask you to sit down, __________ not going to anyway. And don't worry about the vase.

What vase?

That vase.

I'm sorry.

I said, don't worry about it. I'll get one of my kids to fix it.

How _______ know?

Ohhhh, what's really going to bake your noodle [1] later on is, _________ still ____ broken it if I hadn't said anything. You're cuter than I thought. I can see why she likes you.

Who?

Not too bright though [2]. You know why Morpheus brought you to see me. {Nods.}  So, ___________ think? Do you think you're The One?

Honestly, I don't know.

You know what that means? {It's} Latin. It means "Know thyself". ____________________ in on a little secret. Being The One is just like being in love. No one can tell you you're in love.  You just know it, through and through. Balls to bones [3]. Well, I better have a look at you. Open your mouth, say "ah".

Ahhh.

Okay. Now I'm supposed to say, "Hmmm, that's interesting, but...," then you say...

But what?

But you already know what I'm going to tell you.

I"m not The One.

Sorry, kid. You've got [4] the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something.

What?

Your next life maybe, who knows? That's the way these things go.

{Smirks}

What's funny?

Morpheus. He, uh, he almost had me convinced.

I know. Poor Morpheus. Without him we're lost.

What do you mean, "without him"?

Are you sure you want to hear this?

{Nods}

Morpheus believes in you, Neo. And no one -- not you, not even me -- can convince _____ otherwise. He believes it so blindly that he's going to sacrifice his life to save yours.

What?

You're going to have to make a choice. In the one hand you'll have Morpheus's life and in the other hand you'll have your own. One of you is going to die. Which one will be up to you. I'm sorry, kiddo. I really am. You have a good soul and I hate giving good people bad news. Oh, don't worry about it. As soon as you step outside that door, you'll start feeling better. You'll remember you don't believe in any of this fate crap. You're in control of your own life, remember? Here, take a cookie. I promise by the time you're done eating it, you'll feel right as rain [5].

What was said was for you and for you alone.

Notes:

[1] bake your noodle = fry your brain.  I've never heard this expression before, but the word "noodle" can mean a person's brain.  She's saying that Neo will think about what happened hard and long, but he won't be able to figure it out and this will cause his brain to overheat and burn out.
[2] Not too bright though = She just said, "You're cuter than I thought" but now she adds, "You're not too bright though."
[3] Latin = She leaves off the first word a couple of times in this scene.  For example, at the beginning of this scene, she said, "{They} smell good, don't they?" and here she says, "{It's} Latin".  I recommend that foreigners say include these words and not leave them out.  If you leave them out, the chances are greater that the people you're talking to won't understand you.
[4] Balls to bones = I've never heard this expression before.  I've also never heard anyone say "bake your noodle", so it seems like the Oracle is making up her own expressions.
[5] You've got = Notice that the "v" is silent so it sounds like "you got".  "You've got" is grammatically correct.
[6] To be/feel as right as rain = to be/feel 100% healthy (physically and/or mentally).
