I used to think that the word 'news' originated in the four directions, that is north, east, west and south. The other day I came across a Persian blog (آموزش زبان انگلیسی) the blog wrote that this word was influenced by the French word 'nouveau'. This word means 'new', but when it's made plural (nouvelles), it means 'news'. So, the word news originated in the word 'new'!!!

I thought it would be good to share it with you

Hi

Yeah, the suppossedly etymology of this word suits it quit well, and I think that's why it's easy to believe that it has to do with cardinal direction;)

Hi Sara

It sounds that our Persian language isn’t the only one that has borrowed many loanwords from French, and as you mentioned English is influenced much more by French and that could be a good news for those who are interested in learning French too. I also didn’t know that “news” has a french root, so thanks for sharing it with us.

Anyway you weren’t so wrong in your initial assumption about the origin of the word “news”. Yeah, It makes quite a sense as we listen to the news to find out what’s happening in every corner of our world (North, East, West, South).. N E W S, quite suit it.

It’s always fun to see similarities between different languages.
