John:  Bah humbug.

Derek:  That sounds like the Scrooge from the Christmas Carol.

John:  Oh. That’s right. I was trying to remember where I’ve heard that before.

Derek:  Yeah. Have you ever seen that one?

John:  I did when I was a little kid. I think my mom used to make me watch it. Isn’t it the one with Christmas past and Christmas future and stuff?

Derek:  Yeah. And he kinda learns his lesson about how to behave.

John:  Oh, yeah. Like what’s right and wrong and the consequences of different behavior.

Derek:  Exactly. And how to treat his workers and.

John:  Yeah. But what does that have to do with Christmas?

Derek:  Well, I guess since Christmas is such a whole-hearted, ya know, good family time, then it’s a, it’s a nice environment to tell that type of story.

John:  Like, and give the message of being good to others and everything like that?

Derek:  Exactly, it’s like giving feeling.

John:  That’s what Christmas is all about, right? Giving.

Derek:  Giving and receiving. Yep.

John:  That’s why we do the presents, I think.

Derek:  Yeah. Santa Claus was generous.

John:  It’s not just about getting your iPod this year, is it?

Derek:  No. It’s a little bigger picture than that.

John:  Okay. That’s cool.

Discussion

When people don’t want to be giving at Christmas time, we call them scrooges. Scrooge is the main character in A Christmas Carol. He was a wealthy man who was very greedy and didn’t help his community at all.

Watching this movie is a big part of growing up in America. The original comes on several times during the Christmas season. There are a lot of re-makes, too.

I think I’ll watch this one tonight!
