Steph

Kyle:  Hey, Stephanie, what did you do last night?

Steph:  I watched a pretty depressing movie actually.

Kyle:  What movie?

Steph:  It was called Barfly. It made me feel really good about where I am in life.

Kyle:  I’ve never heard about that movie, but I thought of barfly. Isn’t that someone who just hangs out in bars?

Steph:  Exactly. That’s why it was so depressing. The two main characters, they literally just stayed at the bar the whole movie.

Kyle:  Did they ever leave?

Steph:  Well, one time, the guy tried to go out and get a job and he was unsuccessful. And then one time the girl tried to go out and get a job and, the same result, ya know.

Kyle:  Well, I guess if you spend all your time at a bar, uh, you don’t have to get an apartment then, huh?

Steph:  Yeah. Well, they had an apartment, but I don’t know how they paid for it. They were total losers.

Kyle:  Well, different strokes for different folks.

Steph:  Yep.

Discussion

This movie was seriously depressing. It was based on the life of its writer, Charles Bukowski.
The main male character is a writer, who is a serious alcoholic. He hooks up with a woman, played by Faye Dunaway, who is also an alcoholic.
It was depressing to see them ruin their lives. On the other hand, watching them, made me feel good about my own life. I guess that’s what movies are for.
