It’s typical for parents to sing to their children to make them fall asleep. I wanted to know what songs Tanis’ parents sung to her when she was young, so I asked her. Listen in to our conversation to hear what she has to say.

Migs

Tanis:  Miguel, did your mom ever sing you to sleep when you were a little boy?

Migs:  Not that I remember, but I’m sure she must have. Did your parents sing you to sleep?

Tanis:  Oh yeah. They both did.

Migs:  What songs did they sing?

Tanis:  I think actually my favorite was, uh, what’s that one by James Taylor?

“Rock-a-bye Sweet Baby James…”
That one? It’s like, not a kid’s song, but it was my favorite.

Migs:  Oh. So, did your dad sing that?

Tanis:  No, no. My dad liked to sing a song where he called us petunias.

“The bird is the word and the word is the bird…”
He sang that song all the time when I was little.

Migs:  That made you fall asleep?

Tanis:  No. He made us laugh… but that’s what my dad sang.

Migs:  Oh, I see. The only songs that I can remember were Linda Rondstat and the Rolling Stones. I used to fall asleep with my head on the speaker listening to the Rolling Stones.

Tanis:  Oh, that’s got to be healthy for your early audial development.

Migs:  I think that’s why I have trouble hearing these days.

So, did they sing you any lullaby’s?

Tanis:  All the Pretty Horses. All the Pretty Little Horses.

Migs:  I’ve never heard that one either.

Tanis:  Oh, it’s really pretty.

Migs:  Maybe I’ll look up the lyrics online so I can sing it to myself tonight.

Discussion

Tanis is a good singer, but her memory isn’t great. She doesn’t seem to clearly recall any of the songs her parents sung. Of course, I don’t either.
I really liked listening to rock music when I was a child. Sometimes my friends are surprised by the fact that I was listening to real music when I was only 5 or 6 years old.
What did you listen to when you were a kid? Did your parents sing to you? Talk with your friends about it. Music is a great topic to discuss if you want to improve your English abilities.
Rock on!
Miguel
