Joe:  Well Nedra, now that the Thanksgiving season is upon us, I have to ask you, what are you going to be doing to celebrate this festive occasion?

Nedra:  I’m getting together with, um, some friends and family and having a nice big Thanksgiving dinner.

Joe:  That’s incredible! So is it family here in town or are you going to have people coming from out of town?

Nedra:  Um, my boyfriend’s dad’s coming up from California.

Joe:  Oh, excellent, excellent. So now are you going to do any cooking?

Nedra:  Yeah. I’m going to be making lots of dressing and pies. What are you doing for Thanksgiving Joe?

Joe:  Let’s see… For Thanksgiving, I’m just going to be really low key and hang out with my mom, and my grandmother, and my step dad, and probably my dad. We’ll all hang out and just eat and everything, and, and just have a good time.

Nedra:  That sounds pretty traditional. Um, I’ve done that a lot with my family in the past when I was at home.

Joe:  Oh, cool. That’s right ‘cause you’re from Idaho, right?

Nedra:  Yep.

Joe:  Is there anything special that you did in Idaho for Thanksgiving when you were growing up?

Nedra:  Not really. I remember I had chicken pox one time. That really wasn’t fun. I couldn’t hardly swallow my food.

Discussion

Joe and Nedra are both going to be spending time with their loved ones for Thanksgiving this year. Joe’s plans are more traditional than Nedra’s in that he will be with his family. Nedra’s family lives far away, but she has made dear friends here, with whom she will be celebrating the holiday. This shows how the word “family” isn’t only about people you are related to!
I love the fact that there is one day each year that is meant to remind us of the many blessings we have in our lives. I wish everyone around the globe a very happy Thanksgiving day, even if you don’t usually celebrate this holiday!
Your friend,
Tanis
