When someone tries to hit or shove us, we naturally crouch down and raise our hands over our heads in order to protect ourselves. Hunkering is another word for crouching. When you hunker down, you take shelter. You try to protect yourself from harm, or get through something difficult.

Many people don’t expect marriage to be difficult. But as the actress Scarlett Johansson learned, it often is. In order to protect your marriage and get through difficult times, you might need to hunker down with your partner.

Scarlett says that she wasn’t prepared to hunker down and do the hard work that marriage often requires with her ex-husband, Ryan Reynolds. Instead of hunkering down as a couple when their relationship hit hard times, Ryan and Scarlett divorced. Now she understands how much work it takes to maintain a healthy, happy marriage.

Have you ever had to hunker down and get through something difficult? What do you think it takes to maintain a happy relationship?

Hello Butta, . I agree with you and  and how  well  you  have put it:it takes two to dance tango, Quote, I  wasn´t prepared to  hunker down and do the work”  I get what  she meant by  hunker down, my doubt is ” do the work ”  did she mean   that  she was so overwhelmed  by her marriage  failure  that  it was of no use for her to fight  to save it?

It’s all about chemistry that should be mutual. If it’s gone, no inspiration to hunker down.

The boy named Sue from Johnny Cash song also managed to hunker down carrying a girl’s name. Later, he revenged his father, beating him up. Not the parents’ topic, I know. His Dad said to him, “Son, this world is rough
and if a man’s gonna make it, he’s gotta be tough”. So, hunker down or tough it out.

All credits to  today’s lesson winners, they’ve put the phrase “hunker down” on a silver platter and injected  their understanding of it through my system, with their golden tipped syringue of savoir faire, like a splash of fresh water to my face in the morning!  :  ) .So I wrote this:

   I always hunker down for unexpected difficulties to come my way. However I wouldn’t call myself a pessimist. I’m the very opposite: I’m an optimist and a realist, a combination that rarely leads to disappointment, I believe. I’m the type of person who always puts his obligations (present or future) in perspective. What I mean, is that I analyze every facet of my tasks, every hypothetical difficulty I might have to face, in order to fulfill them effectively. This is my method to prevent surprises, mistakes and regrets but mainly to minimize failure (damage). Because when you have a good understanding of a task you are given, or an obligation you have to meet, you’ll know beforehand whether it’s going to be easy to tackle down or not. Therefore, your mindset is already prepared to cope through the “storm” (possible difficulty) to come. I don’t believe in lucks, I’ve learned since an early age that nothing comes easy thereby I don’t take anything for granted, no task is too easy or too hard until I have given it a thorough analysis and figure out how I’m going to weave my way out of it, success is always my goal. So people hunker down, brace for any issues you are prone to face because the sun will always rise after the storm, but first you have to live through it, survive it.

   So Scarlett Johansson, I looked you up on Wikipedia and found out that you and Ryan Reynolds have been together for at least 3 years, very impressive! Given that most Hollywood couples barely made I through the “honeymoon period”. Haven’t you learned from your peers that marriage is in fact complicated and required a lot of sacrifice and tolerance? I knew that since I was an altar boy! I think most of these movie stars have lost the matrimonial guideline script somewhere. What do I mean by that? I have never heard of two stars being engaged, I mean the real deal, the real engagement phase. Where you’re supposed to be testing the water, find out if this person is the right one, get to know each other, lay all your cards on the table, familiarize yourself with the other person’s flaws, be honest to one another,, that is why being engaged is there for. And it is important because it’s a conception of the real thing (marriage).it’s the foundation, the cornerstone of the shelter for the storm (marriage) that’s likely to come. Sometimes, it takes time to know someone else in and out, don’t rush it. Often time, these actors meet on movie sets or after making out with each other in a romantic scene, (“Gigli” J.Lo and Ben Afleck?) or after a drunken red carpet event after-party, and then they decide to commit right after those frivolous moment. They didn’t hunker down with each other long enough : )
However, Scarlett Jo and Ryan Reynolds I’d like to applaud you for handling this divorce situation in an orderly manner , by compromising and accepting the fact that you two weren’t meant to be together. I know it sounds crazy, but that was a very classy divorce, compared to the Kim Kardashian’s latest scandal.

I like this phrase “Hunker down” it’s versatile, it can be used in a lot of contexts indeed.

Tip: hunker down before the manure hits the fan .Hunker down things aren’t as easy and safe as they might seem .

Tongue out

Scarlett Johansson got a hard lesson from her marriage. I wish her to be more careful and wise girl in the future.

I have not seen those many people, that don’t expect marriage to be difficult.

Usually people prepare themselves that marriage is a quite complicated and very important thing in their lives.

Marriage needs lots of care, attention, sacrifices, trust, understanding and mutual love of course.  That’s why people think carefully million times before they make a decision about  their marriage.

My marriage is not  so young and not so old ( 12 years together).

My advice to maintain a happy relationship is:

1. don’t be selfish, forget about it, because now you share your life with boy(girl) you really love. Your love is so strong that you both feel each other “under your skin”. There is “chemistry” between you and your beloved.

2. Be ready to make concessions;

3. Be ready to trust your spouse fully and give him (her) freedom. I mean freedom to spend your spouse’s  time without you sometimes ( with friends, in the sauna, in the fishing, hunting, in the business trip etc);

4. Let your spouse to feel that you are not only wife( husband) but you can be  his (her) true friend as well.

Taking this small advice you will get though any  difficulties of life, believe my experience, please.

When you hunker or crouch, you are getting self-defense instinct. The safer place you’ve ever been was in your mother’s uterus. All human being has this instinct. It is called fetal position. In martial arts one of the purposes is to fight against this instinct, to do not loose the focus in combat, because in this position you usually close the eyes and cover the head.

Now, talking about marriage, usually the people don’t give the due value for the family concept. God sad “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him”.  So the first problem in the humanity was the solitude, and it was solved with a marriage.

God always have the best for us, but He gives us the freedom to choice to deny him. So the consequences are by our own.

May God bless you all.

If partners want to have a happy relationship they should understand, support and help each other in any situation, but  not chase only his/her own interests.  They should be a united body.  As a marriage half our rights and double our duties, in some cases it’s necessary to sacrifice for your half…

I think the best way to hunker down is to take a break for awhile, and realise how much we love each other.

This topic is very inetersting… being in a relationship is the biggest and most important phase of our life. so we should chose the right one that will fits our  personality because they will be our partner in life. Me and my soon to be hubby had a lot of arguements, disagreements and misunderstanding… to the point that we’ve broke up many times, but because both of us trully love each other we both find ways work it out no matter what our problem is because we rather have time together that good times with someone else coz it just means that we really love each other. Now we’re together for two years already and our relationship is getting stronger and more deeper. I know there’ll be a lot of trials that will come in our way but we just need to think how much we love each other and no matter what we will work it out.
