It isn’t mandatory to join the military in our country, because our country has so large population. I can’t join military due to I am nearsighted. Even though I can’t join the military, I still can contribute to our country at the other areas, such education, medical treatment, science etc.

I regret that I can’t join the US Army because my English and math are not good, so I didn’t pass the exam.

Joining the military is mandatory here, but every second guy tryes to avoid it.  

Simply speaking,military career makes a man more like a man.

it is obligation to join the army and it is duty .

i joined to military after university graduation ,i was soidier for about 2 years

,its too hard

but i think we shoud  protect our country because years ago many people

protected  me and my land and my family…

our land is same a part of the our body

i grow up in my country ..my father  grow up in my country …..his father …

and…...

we shoud be helpe our country when need to us

Both my grandfather and my father had joined the army,the difference between them is my grandfather had exprienced the real war almost ten years ,He can’t see anything about war or violence on TV at his old times.My father served in peace years ,For my father, those years are full of the best memories.Army developed him become a person with decipline,responsibilities,strong will,spitrit of not afraid of hardship….

For me ,people who wanna become a soilder then go for their dreams .Mandatory can’t beat dreams ,so there is something called hope. whatever,I hate war

In my country it was mandatory and I had to serve in the army one year, that was way back in time. Since the year 1994, as a consecuence of the murder of a conscript by an abusive officer  ( the abuse was  rampant in the army  ) the law was abolished . Now young boys and girls can join  the army  if they like to pursue a militar career. i respect Gary`s decision, although i couldn´t agree more with Lily. 

It is mandatory in our country unless you have some problems with health, or if you study in a college or university, to enlist into the army in another region of our country during one year. But of course it depends on the age. Some young men pay money for avoiding this commitment.

In my country you can choose to join the army. In italy the majority of people aren’t patriotic and so they don’t take in consideration this opportunity. In italy the army is very expensive for the the country’s economy, i don’t like this waste.

At this moment, are groups of little children, all dressed in their school colors—all preparing to march down the street in rhythm to their country’s battle hymn. Where is the pride, glory or honor in this?

I think my country hasn’t given me any opportunity. I never going to enlist me in the army. In my country it’s a choosen, fortunatelly. The army only works for the politic games. I’m not going to fight for the interest of the richs.

Ola, I agree with you that the world isn’t perfect—maybe never will be, but there is hope—hope is all that any of us can possibly have.
I’m not saying that at times, war isn’t necessary. Many times, war is necessary for those whose lives’ are being threatened.
It may be a misunderstanding that even the Bible is opposing war when it reads in such places as Exodus 20:13 “Thou shall not kill…” and then to apply this to mean that God has commanded us not to protect ourselves, our families and/or our friends—even if it means war.
Again, I am not against war—what I oppose is the idea that war needs to be fought with malice or with a revengeful heart.
Yes, the horrible and shocking events that happened at Crimea were disgusting and inexcusable. However, I disagree that “only the strong (being only strong of military power) survive. As history has shown time after time, those “who live by the sword—will die by the sword”.
I still stand by my ideal that no one should be made a hero in war—there is no heroism about war—it simply, at times, becomes an unfortunate responsibility.
A hero, to me, is a person who when at times of war, and possibly in the face of severe consequences, cares for an enemy in need.

Those people who are ready to lose their lives for protecting  their own  country , They are real HERO . Salute to all of them

 I disagree handwriter. If you don’t defense your country, they will take over and that’s it. Like it happened with Crimea. Crimea was taken only because Ukraine didn’t have a proper army and many millitary officials turned out to be traitors taking the Russian side. Yanukovich, the former toppled president, has taken care off of ruining the Ukrainian military, putting everywhere his own people. If Ukraine had the Army, and had shown that it can answer back defensing its territory, there wouldn’t have been a mess and deaths in other parts of the country.

Unfornutaley, very sadly and disgusting, the mankind hasn’t evolved at all with all democracy, with all the agreements that turned out to be just a piece of paper.

The strongest rule. Army is the defense and strenth of the country and should be since World is far from being perfect!

While there exists amongst us, rapacious and greedy people upon the earth, there will always be war. War is an ugly business to be sure, but at times, war is unavoidable for survival. At those times of war, it should always be carried out on the defensive—never on the offensive*(on the attack); therefore, war should never be committed on foreign lands—war should be an act of protecting your home and your family. No heroes should ever be made from war; no praises of honor should ever be paraded—for there is no honor in war. War should be carried out as swiftly as possible—and then even a quicker and complete forgiveness should follow.

*It is suggested that using defensive and offensive as contrasting meanings, is incorrect.

Once you choose,you need to stick to it. 

Joining the military should be only on voluntary basis like what is happening in almost the whole world. But in case of the war, there should be, out of question,  obligatory.

If joining the army is a must – it’s wrong! Imagine you’re 18 years old, want to do something in your life, achieve goals but only after you serve for a couple of years in the military. And you don’t want it! Plus,  it’s not a piece of cake. The life in there, in some countries, is like in prison and often ruins the lives of young ones for the rest of their lives.

So joining the army is only by choice!
