If you own a business, you know how important money can be. It’s important to not spend more than you have, or if you do, have a plan for how to pay the bank for what you have borrowed. It’s important to your family, too. You need enough money to pay your bills. When you don’t have it, life can get very complicated.
Having the right amount of what you need will help your business grow, and the same can be said for you as a person. If you can strike a balance in your life and not do too much of any one thing, you will probably be happier. It’s easy to get busy with school or work and not see enough of your friends, for example. But seeing your friends brings balance to your life. It’s good for your health to be around the people you care about.
Marni isn’t doing a good job of striking a balance, so Sara is trying to help. Read on in today’s English lesson.

Sara_R: Marni. Wake up!
Marni: Oh my gosh. What time is it? Was I asleep?
Sara_R: It’s 4 o’clock, and I’m pretty sure you were out cold.
Marni: 4 o’clock? I’m never going to finish this, and the deadline is tomorrow.
Sara_R: Finish what? What deadline?
Marni: My application for graduate school.
Sara_R: That’s great! Good for you. Just make sure you strike a balance between school and the rest of your life.
Marni: I know. Hey, did I tell you that I got an idea for an online business?
Sara_R: No, you did not. But you’re already so busy. How will you be able to do all of this?
Marni: Frankly, I have no idea.
Sara_R: Listen, I know all about striking a balance.
Marni: You do?
Sara_R: Yes. I have my own side business that I do after work.
Marni: Do you really? What is it?
Sara_R: It’s… sorry. Hello? Yes, I can be there right now. OK. Sorry, I’ve got to go.

Marni is working hard on her application for graduate school. She needs to finish it right away because the deadline is tomorrow. If she doesn’t turn the application in on time, she might not be able to return to school.
Sara finds her sleeping and wakes her up. She tells Marni that it’s important to strike a balance between school and everything else in her life. Sara knows how to strike a balance because she has a side business in addition to her job as a bike messenger. She begins telling Marni all about it when her phone rings.
Is it easy for you to strike a balance in your life?
