In today’s world, many people are changing the conversation about personal identity. In the past, there was a lot of intolerance toward those who did not live typical lives. However, people have been raising awareness about different types of identities. Many want the world to become a more tolerant place for all people.
Recently, Caitlyn Jenner came out to the world as transgender. In the past, she was the male athlete, Bruce Jenner. However, she never felt comfortable in her male body. She was famous for winning a gold medal at the 1976 Olympic games. Then, in 2015, she decided to face the world as Caitlyn. She had a spread in Vanity Fair magazine that explained her choice. She wanted to live the life she dreamed of while helping other transgender individuals.
Listen to today’s English lesson to hear Gary and Andy talk about Caitlyn Jenner’s courage.

Andy_H: There’s been a lot of media hype around Caitlyn Jenner.
Gary: There has been.
Andy_H: She had her spread in Vanity Fair. She came out very publically as transgender.
Gary: I think she also won an award at ESPN, is that right?
Andy_H: Well, she won the Courage Award. And I’m not 100% sure that I agree with giving her the Courage Award.
Gary: I actually think that it’s a fascinating decision from ESPN to award it to Caitlyn Jenner, who is transgender and has changed the whole conversation of what it means to be transgender.
Andy_H: And brought so much awareness to the intolerance that people with transgender issues face. But when I think of courage, my first thought goes to people in the army, firemen…
Gary: Don’t forget that, in Caitlyn’s past, she won Olympic medals, so she achieved much more than just to transition from male to female. She was just changing the conversation so that others, who are going through the same process, could go through it in a much easier way.
Andy_H: And I am happy that, finally, we’re having a conversation about the transitioning process in general.
Gary: Yeah.
Andy_H: It’s something that really needs to be talked about.

Discussion
Andy and Gary have both seen a lot of media hype about Caitlyn Jenner, and they have mixed feelings about this. Although they both think that Caitlyn Jenner is changing the conversation in a helpful way, they have different opinions about her winning the ESPN Courage Award.
Andy thinks that the Courage Award should go to people who fight to protect others. However, Gary thinks that Caitlyn’s choice to transition from male to female was very courageous. In fact, they both think that Caitlyn was able to help many people who are also transgender because she came out so publically.
How do people fight against intolerance in your country? When did you make a choice that took courage?
