The world is filled with every type of person. Sometimes, people work well together because they are similar. But at other times, we need people who have different skills than we do. Think about it…. You probably have many different types of friends, and you might not understand all of them all the time. Still, it is good to build communities of different types of people who you can trust. Some of our communities are in our cities or schools, but others might be on the internet. These networks of people create our social fabric.

Just like a cloth, social fabric contains many different threads. These threads are people, ideas, places, and even hopes for the future. Mark Zuckerberg create the social network Facebook. He already knew a lot about creating a strong social fabric, but he wanted to know more. He and his wife decided to travel around the United States so they could talk to many different people and learn how these people create the social fabric that holds their communities together.

Are you part of a strong social fabric? What is one community that you belong to?
