Imagine that you are walking near a cemetery. You hear a scary noise. Then, you see a hand reaching out from the ground. There are suddenly many hands, and then many bodies. These human beings begin walking toward you, but they are not alive. They are the living dead, and they want your brains. It’s time to start running for your life!

This type of classic scene happens in many different zombie movies. We can thank George A. Romero for this. He began the cult of zombie movies in the 1960s when he made Night of the Living Dead. This movie was so scary that people had strong visceral reactions to it, and it became very popular. Sadly, George Romeo passed away recently, but he will always be remembered whenever there is a zombie on the movie screen.

Listen as Andy tells Dominique all about George Romero’s movies in today’s English lesson.

Andy_H:  Oh, man! Dominique, did you hear?

Dominique:  Hear about what?

Andy_H:  George A. Romero died.

Dominique:  Who’s that?

Andy_H:  Who? What? Dominique sometimes… George Romero invented the zombie movie. You ever heard of Night of the Living Dead?

Dominique:  No.

Andy_H:  Are you kidding me?! It’s a classic…. OK! Night of the Living Dead came out in the 60s. It was the first zombie movie… You know what zombie movies are, right?

Dominique:  Like mummies?

Andy_H:  No… Oh, my… I’m not going to explain what zombies are.

Dominique:  OK….

Andy_H:  Anyways, he invented the zombie movie. You know, like, “Ahh, the world has turned into zombies, and we’re the last human beings alive!”

Dominique:  OK.

Andy_H:  And this movie became so popular that it got banned in a bunch of places and started this whole cult culture of zombie movies. So, then they came out with Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and, like, millions of…

Dominique:  Oh! I’ve heard of those movies!

Andy_H:  Yeah.

Dominique:  OK. These are scary movies.

Andy_H:  Yes.

Dominique:  Yeah, I don’t do scary movies.

Andy_H:  Oh, my… well, that explains it. You don’t do scary movies?

Dominique:  Yeah, that’s like brains, and guts, and just… no!

Andy_H:  All that awesome visceral stuff! It’s great!

Andy asks Dominique if she knows about George A. Romero’s death. Dominique doesn’t even know who George Romero is. Andy is very surprised! He tells her that Romero made the first zombie movie. It was a cult classic, and many people loved it. Dominique is confused, she doesn’t understand what a zombie is, and Andy isn’t going to explain all the details.

Andy tells her how Romero’s movies began a whole new style of scary films. They were even banned in some places because they were too scary. Dominique says that she never watches scary movies, and Andy understands why she doesn’t know who Romero was. She is too afraid to see brains and guts in a movie!

Do you like zombie movies? If you saw a zombie, what would you do?

I liked World War Z. I don’t like zombies and the scenes, but I liked the struggle in the movie. I can also say that I liked most of Resident Evil movies.

I can’t imagine seeing a zombie!
