In the new movie Dirty Pretty Things, Okwe (Chewitil Ejiofor), a kind-hearted Nigerian doctor, and Senay (Audrey Tautou), a Turkish chambermaid, work at the same West London hotel. Both of them are illegal immigrants, so they’re on the run from the British authorities. They are trying their best to find enough money to buy fake passports so they can leave London and travel to New York City, but they experience many strange and difficult things along the way.
Miguel recently saw Dirty Pretty Things. Listen to his conversation with Zach to learn more about it.

Miguel:  So Zach, I saw this movie I think you’ll really like.

Zach:  Why’s that?

Miguel:  Well, it’s kind of a strange movie. It’s, like, totally different than anything I’ve seen before, and, um, it’s called Dirty Pretty Things. Have you heard of it?

Zach:  No. I haven’t. Is it a foreign film?

Miguel:  Well it’s not foreign, although it has some foreign actors. It has this,uh, African actor – I can’t pronounce his name – and then it has, uh, Audrey Tautou – she’s French. Do you know her?

Zach:  No. Who’s she?

Miguel:  Um, she’s in that movie Amelie. Did you see that?

Zach:  No, you know, I missed that one, but…

Miguel:  Well, she’s a, she’s a really cute and interesting French actress and she actually plays a Turkish, uh, woman in this movie. But, um, basically it’s these immigrants in London and they just live these really extraordinary lives. So it’s… I don’t, I can’t give anything away, ‘cause it’s really weird, but, um, I just say you should see it. For sure.

Zach:  Is it set in the present day?

Miguel:  Yeah. It’s present day, and, um, it’s real life. I mean, it’s just like, maybe it takes place over a week or two. Um, but it’s real gritty. You know, it’s kinda urban feeling, but it, it’s, it’s…

Zach:  OK. I’m sold. I’ll see it!

Discussion

I’d hadn’t heard of Dirty Pretty Things until Miguel mentioned it to me. He makes it sound really good, and I’m definitely excited about seeing Audrey Tautou in a new movie. I loved her in Amelie, but I haven’t seen her in a movie since then. She has a beautiful face and quirky personality that’s very appealing.
If you’re into movies that are a bit off the beaten track, you’ll probably like Dirty Pretty Things. From what I’ve heard about it, it’s quite different than everything else out there.
See you at the movies!
